What to do if we're full...

Turning folks away is the hardest part of our job, but we would never sleep if we took everyone.

"But how do I know that the person I choose isn't going to ruin my dress?"

Good question. Here are some tips and tricks to finding an alterations specialist if we aren't available.

Look for reviews, ask at the local bridal shops for their recommendations, ask around for word of mouth reputations, ask on social media, and then ask lots of question to test their knowledge.

Keep looking, keep searching, get on a reservation list somewhere and don't put it off.

Questions to ask Sewists

My goal is to arm you with questions to find out the knowledge and skill level of potential sewists in your hunt for someone to help you. The hardest part about our society being so removed from sewing knowledge as a normal household skill, is that we don't even know the right questions to ask to be sure we won't be taken advantage of!! Here are some things you can ask:

  • How do you know if the shoulders need to be raised (taken up/lifted)?
  • What do you do when the fabric is gaping away from my body around the neckline?
  • What alteration can you do if the neckline is too wide for my body?
  • What do you do when the part between my arm holes is too wide (above my bust but below my collar bone)?
  • Do I need a bra, or is the padding in the dress enough?
  • How do you determine where to take in a dress if it's too loose in the middle?
  • What holds up a strapless dress?
  • The top of the zipper is tight and then it's loose in the small of my back... How do I keep the zipper from coming down?
  • What if my torso is shorter than the dress, how do we fix that?
  • The top layer of the skirt of my dress is gathered, but the underneath is tight. How do we make it fit better in the underneath layers?
  • What if I'm not sure about my shoes yet?
  • What is your method for marking a hem on a dress? pants?
  • What are some common alterations you're seeing this bridal season?
