Ballroom Bustle & Twist Trick

10/17/2022

A typical bustle we install is what is known as a Ballroom Bustle. This bustle makes the dress go from having a train to not having one at all because the train has been folded up to the inside as if the dress had become a "ballroom" length gown.

Many, many years ago, Carolyn's bustle broke during her wedding and she vowed that she would install better bustle points than what was put in her bustle.  Brides shouldn't have to have the same experience Carolyn had.

We have a few different ways of doing bustle points, but in this post we are featuring the type with ribbon and buttons. Our customers can simply button the loop over the button.

Our infamous twist trick

These supplies can be used in many different styles of bustles, but in this particular dress, the train doesn't have enough weight to stay buttoned. We struggled to keep the buttons from unbuttoning themselves during our fitting with the client. Well, we have a 2-part trick for that.

Step one: Twist the fabric 2 or 3 times and THEN button.

Step two: After buttoning, untwist to cinch the ribbon like a twistie tie.

Doing the bustle this way takes a bit more time when you're bustling the dress, but it really tightens the ribbons around the button so that it cannot become unbuttoned.

See the above process altogether in this video:

Happy bustling!

Kristen sews because clothes don't come shaped like humans and people often think their bodies are the problem, which is a problem.
